It’s not everyday that you see someone playing a charango. But this small, South American instrument is just one of the unique and native instruments taught at INTEMPO (formerly INTAKE Organization) to students across communities in lower Connecticut including Stamford, Norwalk, Danbury, and Bridgeport. Stefanie Veliz – who began playing the charango in 2014 when she was 8 years old – is one of those students.

Stefanie loves learning about the instrument because so “many countries play the charango” and there are a variety of interesting songs that you can play on it. She says, “the thing that makes me happy about this music is learning how to play different cultural instruments.” Not only does the charango help Stefanie learn about different cultures, but she also believes it will bring her good luck, and help her in the future when she’s ready to learn how to play the guitar. In her words, “I’ll already know the names of the strings!”

INTEMPO, founded by violinist and educator, Angelica Durrell, in 2011, is a great place to learn and blossom as a young musician. “If one of my classmates is learning faster than me, my teacher, Carlos Boltes, always lets me catch up and never leaves me behind,” says Stefanie.

Working with SpreadMusicNow-sponsored INTEMPO has changed Stefanie’s young life by teaching her “the meaning of music.” In the future, she plans to share all that she’s learned and “teach kids about this amazing instrument.”
