Our friends at KEYS Music nominated Samantha Lundstrom for SpreadMusicNow's July Music Student of the Month. Samantha is a senior in Bridgeport, CT and is a pianist and vocalist.

Samantha (stage name "Genesis") is participating in the new reality TV show Vocal Match. She worked with Javier Colon, season 1 winner of NBC's The Voice, and KEYS teacher Peter Randazzo who is the musical director of the show. How did Genesis do in the competition? We don't know yet, so tune in this fall to watch her performance!

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How long have you been playing your instrument?

I've always been drawn to music and performance from a young age. I loved singing, dancing, making music, all of it. I started with piano lessons when I was about 13 years old. I've been taking piano really seriously for about five years now. I dream of getting my music to New York and becoming a name on Broadway, but that's a work in progress.

What has music and/or your program taught you?

Music has taught me a lot. A lot of life skills and a lot about how I decide to view the world. I struggle saying it's just music that taught me these things; it's 100% the artists, as well. I often fear what image I may falsely project because my music doesn't fit my image, but through this program, I've met so many artists who reassured me that I match my art quite well. I have learned how to love music even more through the folks I met through KEYS and that being myself is really the most important thing to do in this world.

What is your favorite piece of music to play?

I am quite a sucker for playing what I consider to be "simple songs that sound complex," like, 'Comptine d'un autre été,' from one of my favorite movie soundtracks ever, 'Amelie', or a sonatina of some sort.

What do you like to do for fun? Do you have any hobbies?

I have a ton of hobbies so it really depends on the day for what I'll do but, I do enjoy creating characters, stories, drawing and writing.

What is your favorite subject(s) in school? Why?

My favorite subjects since middle school (besides music of course) have always been History and Geography. I love learning about the past, how it got us where we are today, and about different worldly agriculture.

What are your plans for the future?

I have a very specific plan for my future mapped out. A very vague peak on that map is to graduate college and then get to hopefully Broadway. Whatever happens in my future though, I prefer that I stay heavily involved in music throughout it.
