January Music Student of the Month

We are excited to announce that Jason Albeño is our January Music Student of the Month! He was nominated by Angie Durrell, Founder and Executive Director at INTEMPO.

Jason is a 16-year-old high school student who moved to the United States in 2014 from Guatemala. At the time, he didn't speak or understand English, so he set a goal for himself: he would learn how to speak, read, and write in English in less than a year. Having met that goal, he decided that he wanted to become a polyglot. He is currently studying French at school and hopes to add many other languages to his repertoire.

Jason inherited his passion for music from his grandfather; memories of his grandfather playing the guitar and singing to children have had a big impact on his life. Quite by accident, Jason found an old, dusty classical guitar with broken strings that had been stored inside a closet. He later learned that it had belonged to his grandfather. He bought new strings, picks, and a lesson book and started teaching himself the basics of his new-found passion. Knowing he needed the guidance of a teacher, he came to INTEMPO, where he has been studying guitar for the past year and advancing very quickly in the folk ensemble and teenager guitar groups. His musical ambitions don't stop with the guitar; his dream is to learn how to play many instruments, including violin, bass, piano, trumpet, drums, and ukulele.

"Every Tuesday after his music lessons, we have a family conversation and Jason is always very happy and excited to tell me what he learned at INTEMPO," says Jason's mother.

In the future, Jason wishes to pursue aviation and become a commercial pilot.
