April Music Student of the Month

AlaniOur April Music Student of the Month goes to Alani Mya Justice Hall! She's in the 4th grade in San Pedro, California, and has used the Little Kids Rock program to further her music education. Alani is a singer and plays the piano and ukulele.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How long have you been playing your instrument?

My name is Alani, I have two sisters, and have been playing piano for 2 years. Mr. Corallo was my 3rd-grade teacher and he taught me how to play the ukulele while trying new ways to create them. He is one of my favorite teachers. He is the one who nominated me.

What has music taught you?

Music has taught me how to be creative and have fun playing it with my family. The song "Misty Weather" was all done in improv with my sister during COVID. Music has also allowed me to share my thoughts.

What is your favorite piece of music to play?

My favorite piece to play is "Doe, a deer, a female deer." I learned after watching Sound of Music with my nana. As a piano piece, I like playing "Rigaudon" by George Phillip Telemann.

What do you like to do for fun? Do you have any hobbies?

For fun, I love to sew, play with my dog Honey, draw, or create arts and crafts. I love dogs, babies, and listening to soul and hip-hop music while dancing.

What is your favorite subject(s) in school? Why?

My favorite subjects are Art because it brings out creativity and Math because I can work out the problems and explain how I got them. I like sharing my ideas.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans are to become a singer that shares my thoughts through song. I also want to own a type of farm/pet shop where people can relax and play with all types of animals but also have an adoption center so people can take the animals home.
