Congratulations to our July Music Student of the Month, Ivan Cox from Music Haven. Ivan is a great student who always has a smile on his face.
Ivan is 9 years old and attends Wexler Grant School in New Haven, CT. He started playing the cello last year in Music Haven's Music101 class, where he also learned the basics of percussion, keyboards, and guitar, as well as music history and music theory.
His Music101 teacher said, "he's a cellist AND percussionist who always has a smile, and is able to get other kids to remember to enjoy life!" He also "does a mean Worm, and other classic old-school breakdancing moves."
This summer, Ivan and his sister, Siobhan (11)—also a Music Haven student—are participating in a 2-week strings and steel band camp, playing their string instrument and steel pan drums every day. Ivan has worked tremendously hard over the last year, performing in concerts throughout the city, including a student showcase performance at the New Haven Symphony Orchestra this spring. In June, he graduated from Music101 with certificates in beginner cello and percussion fundamentals and will begin lessons in the fall in Music Haven's cello studio.
